Substitute for Gruyère - Best Alternatives
Nutty, rich Swiss cheese. Melts superbly for fondue, French onion soup, and gratins.
Substitutes
- Swiss Cheese — 1:1. Swiss is less intense but melts similarly. Budget-friendly swap for fondue and quiche.
- Cheddar — 1:1. Aged cheddar is closest in sharpness. Less nutty but melts well for gratins and quiche.
- Gouda — 1:1. Aged gouda shares the nutty sweetness. Excellent in fondue and French onion soup.
- Parmesan Cheese — 3/4 cup parmesan per 1 cup gruyère. Parmesan is harder and saltier but shares nutty umami. Best for topping, not melting alone.
- Mozzarella — 1:1. Mozzarella melts well but lacks nutty depth. Add a pinch of nutmeg to approximate.
