Substitute for Cheddar - Best Alternatives
Sharp, tangy aged cheese. Melts smoothly for mac and cheese, grilled cheese, and sauces.
Substitutes
- Gouda — 1:1. Gouda melts beautifully with a milder, buttery flavor. Great swap in mac and cheese and sandwiches.
- Gruyère — 1:1. Gruyère has nuttier flavor and melts superbly. Excellent upgrade in gratins and quiche.
- Mozzarella — 1:1. Mozzarella melts well but is much milder. Good for pizza and baked dishes where sharp flavor isn't key.
- Asiago Cheese — 1:1 (use aged asiago). Aged asiago has similar sharpness. Slightly nuttier. Good in pastas and gratins.
- Parmesan Cheese — 3/4 cup parmesan per 1 cup cheddar. Parmesan is harder and saltier. Use less. Better for topping than melting into sauces.
